There will be a rally today at 6PM at the southern end of North Cove Marina in support of North Cove Marina Management, headed by Michael Fortenbaugh, a local businessman and parent of a PS 150 student. NCMM has managed the North Cove for the past 10 years, and also developed affordable sailing programs for adults and children for the Manhattan Sailing School. Just last week, the Battery Park City Authority informed Fortenbaugh that it will take control of the marina on Dec. 31, signaling that it has chosen another entity, possibly Brookfield Office Properties or Island Global Yachting, to assume management in the new year.
Among local residents and sailors, many of whose children have also been students at the sailing school, the fear is that a new manager will make it financially impossible for the sailing school and the affiliated Manhattan Yacht Club to continue to operate in North Cove.
Friends of Fortenbaugh have launched a website called Save North Cove to rally support for Fortenbaugh’s continued stewardship of the marina, as well as for transparency and community involvement in the decision-making process.
